Battle for Ma’rib

The Yemeni army, backed by Ansarullah forces, has made major advances in the battle to retake the city of Ma’rib from Saudi-backed militants. The Ansarullah forces and their allies took control of Mount Hilan, which overlooks the city. They can now cut some of the supply lines used by the Saudi-backed militants. The latest gain came after days of clashes between the two sides. The Yemeni army began the operation to retake Ma’rib last month. The city is the final territory held by Saudi-backed forces in the north of Yemen and is located in an oil-rich region.

Israeli war crimes probe

The International Criminal Court says it has sent a formal notice to Israel about its impending investigation into possible war crimes by the regime. The ICC says it has given Tel Aviv a month to seek deferral by proving it is carrying out its own probe. Earlier this month, the ICC said it would investigate possible war crimes by Israel following a Palestinian request. The court is expected to focus on the 2014 Gaza war. It would also probe Israel's crackdown on the March of Return rallies there in the past couple of years. The court would also focus on Tel Aviv's settlement activities in the occupied West Bank. Israel has condemned the investigation, accusing the ICC of bias. However, the Palestinians have welcomed the probe.

Coronavirus in Europe

German Health Minister Jens Spahn says coronavirus cases are rising exponentially there. Spahn said the rising cases mean the country might be unable to relax restrictions in the coming weeks. The German minister said there is not enough vaccine in Europe to stop the third wave. Germany is one of the hardest-hit European states by the pandemic. France has been hit hard too, with its case being the sixth largest in the world. The country has so far posted more than 4.11 million Covid infections. It has announced a lockdown in Paris and 15 regions as daily cases spike. The new restrictions will take effect from Friday midnight.
